FIX A TOILET

Fix a Toilet

If your toilet will not flush, here are six troubleshooting steps you can take to try to fix a toilet:

1. Check the water level: Lift the tank lid and check if the water level in the tank is too low. If it is, the toilet may not have enough water to create a strong flush. Adjust the fill valve or float to increase the water level accordingly.

2. Clear any blockages: A clog in the toilet trap or drainpipe can prevent flushing. Use a plunger to try to dislodge the blockage. Place the plunger over the drain hole, create a seal, and vigorously push up and down to create suction. Repeat this several times and then flush the toilet to see if the problem is resolved.

3. Inspect the flush handle and chain: Lift the tank lid and check if the chain connecting the flush handle to the flapper valve is properly attached. If it is loose or disconnected, reattach it to ensure it pulls the flapper up when you press the flush lever.

4. Check the flapper valve: The flapper seal can become worn or damaged over time, causing water leaks and weak flushes. Inspect the flapper for any cracks, warping, or debris. Clean it if necessary, or replace it if it is damaged or not sealing properly.

5. Verify the water supply: Make sure the water supply valve, usually located behind or near the toilet, is fully open. If it is partially closed, it can restrict the flow of water and affect the flush.

6. Call a plumber if necessary: If these steps do not resolve the issue, there may be a more complex problem like a blocked sewer line or a malfunctioning flush valve. In such cases, it is advisable to call a professional plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

Remember to exercise caution and follow proper safety procedures when working with plumbing systems. If you are unsure or uncomfortable handling the issue yourself, it is best to seek professional help to avoid causing further damage.
